WHO WE ARE

OASIS is the Student representative body within the faculty of arts. We are made up entirely of undergraduate students within the faculty, and our job is to make sure that arts students' voices are being heard on all levels of university governance. OASIS was established in 2014, and represents over 6000 undergraduate students on campus. Our goals include: fostering Arts pride, creating an inclusive and welcoming community and providing students with services and events to enhance their time spent in the Faculty of Arts.

OASIS advocates for Arts students to make sure everyone is being adequately represented to the university.

We offer programs, events and services that make life on campus more enjoyable and accessible such as free printing in our Humanities office, giveaways, volunteer opportunities and locker rentals.

We also work with the Arts Faculty, University and outside sources to provide opportunities for Arts students. OASIS offers granting for Department Associations, student groups and students and publishes an annual student academic research through our Crossings Journal, which is a peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal featuring interdisciplinary voices.

WHAT WE DO

OUR TEAM COMPOSITION

OASIS is comprised of the Executives, Councillors, Directors, Crossings Team and Standing Committees. Together, we work to advance the voice of the Arts community at the University of Alberta.

  • The Executive team is comprised of the President, 6 Vice-Presidents, and the Vice Chair.

    The President oversees the operations of OASIS and manages our advocacy causes. This includes meeting with the Student Union, Representatives from the Faculty of Arts, Department Associations, other student organizations on campus, and many others.

    Each Vice-President works on a specific portfolio (Internal, Communications, Academic, Finance, External, Events) that they are entirely responsible for. Additionally, VPs are also required to be active in any advocacy that OASIS is working on.

    The Vice Chair acts as a bridge between the Executive team and the Councillors. The VC is an elected Councillor that oversees and aids the Council with their roles. Additionally, the VC sits as a non-voting member in Executive meetings to ensure Executive accountability and address council concerns.

  • The OASIS Council is composed of 11 Councillors

    • 2 Fine Arts Councillors

    • 3 Humanities Councillors

    • 4 Social Sciences Councillors

    • 1 Interdisciplinary Councillor

    • 1 International Councilor

    Councillors don’t have the specific portfolios that executives do, but are instead more focused on advocacy relating to their disciplines. Executives report to council, and council ensures that the executive team is accurately representing students, and adds an extra layer of accountability. Councillors also host office hours, where they offer support and services to students. 

  • Executives hire directors in order to support the executive fulfill a specific task within their portfolio. These positions are lower commitment and a great way to strengthen particular skills and serve as an introduction to the University Governance community. 

  • Crossings is OASIS’ peer reviewed undergraduate journal. It offers students an introduction to the peer review process, both as authors and editors. There are 30+ members of the team that makes crossings possible. This ranges from editors, to section heads, to Editor in Chief.
