Please Note:
Each membership term technically starts June 1, 2026 and ends May 31, 2027, although most committees do not begin to meet until September or October.
All committees may require in-person or online attendance (i.e. please be prepared for both).
In-person meetings are typically held in the Humanities Centre.
Members are expected to review meeting agendas and supporting materials, attend meetings, contribute to discussions if they feel comfortable doing so, and vote on motions/decisions.

Arts Faculty Council (AFC)

In accordance with Alberta’sPost-Secondary Learning Act (PSLA), AFC has high-level responsibility for the faculty’s academic affairs.
This includes the programs, courses, examinations, course results, admission requirements, academic standing, and granting of degrees.
Each voting member of AFC has an opportunity to speak to these items and to vote on them. Many of these items have a direct impact on students.
This body may be of especial interest to students with an interest in policy, politics, governance, education, business, or sociology.

Academic Affairs Committee (AAC)

AAC reviews and approves proposed changes to Arts courses and programs as they appear in the University Calendar, including any proposed new courses or programs.
Typically, proposed changes are first developed at the department level, then they are reviewed and approved by AAC. From there, proposals may then be forwarded to Arts Faculty Council and/or University-level committees for review and final approval.

AAC will meet online, 1-3 pm on Tuesdays in the Fall Term and 1-3 pm on Mondays in the Winter Term.

Academic & Grade Appeals Committee (AGAC)

When students appeal their academic standing or their final grade in a course, the appeal is heard and decided by this committee.
It is especially important to have student perspectives in the room for this process.

Hearing dates are booked as needed, based on student appeals received. It is possible that none take place over the course of a year. When they do take place, it is mostly in August and early September, however, they may occur during any month including July. Committee members are polled for their availability for each hearing.
Hearings are up to one hour with 30 minutes added for committee deliberations.There may be an orientation meeting in summer or fall.

Arts Committee on the Learning Environment (ACLE)

ACLE brings together instructors, students, and teaching and learning academic administrators to discuss course and curricular development, pedagogical innovations, and other issues of significance to graduate and undergraduate programs and students in the Faculty of Arts. It may address a variety of topics.

Meets in person in Humanities Centre 5-20, first Thursday of the month, 10:30 a.m.-12 noon.

Arts Executive Committee (Arts Exec)

Arts Exec is the executive body of the larger Arts Faculty Council. Its primary activity is to approve the agenda for Arts Faculty Council meetings and to ensure that items being forwarded to AFC are prepared for presentation (e.g. check that items are adequately consulted on, include necessary context, etc).
Additionally, Arts Exec is empowered to act between meetings of the Council and to carry recommendations to it for debate, decision or referral. The Dean may seek its advice on any matter of concern to the Faculty.
This body may be of especial interest to students with an interest in policy, politics, governance, or education.

Also occasional ad-hoc email votes.

Teaching Awards Committee

The Committee meets to assess applications for the Faculty’s Teaching Awards, including those for sessional and graduate students.
For the past two years, this committee has also reviewed applications for the Mactaggart award.
Normally done in the Winter term.

Typically one meeting in April, up to three hours in length. Committee members are polled for their availability
Nomination packages sent to Committee for review two weeks prior. -
